DSDK Puts Down Our Pens and Picks Up Hammers to Volunteer at Habitat for Humanity

The entire DSDK team put down our collective pens and picked up hammers for the day on September 23. No, we weren’t doing handy projects around the firm. We headed out to spend the day volunteering for Habitat for Humanity Kansas City.

What better reason is there to take a day out of the office and put our heads and hands to use for one of our favorite community organizations? Habitat for Humanity offers groups like ours the opportunity to come together for a full, rewarding (and yes, very tiring) day of home building for a deserving family.

Luckily for us, no construction skills or home building experience was required. All we needed were our own work gloves. The Habitat for Humanity team trained and supervised us, plus provided the tools we needed to get the job done. In this case, it was helping build a home for Angela Guess.

Angela is a single mother with two sons, ages six and five. She is a CMT and works in the home health care industry. She has been living with her mother where her and her two boys share one bedroom. She is very excited to have a home for her and her boys.

While the Guess family will certainly appreciate and enjoy their new home, the DSDK team benefited from the experience as well. We finished our day of volunteerism motivated, exhilarated and with a strengthened bond with our community. It brought us great joy as a team to have played a role in helping Habitat for Humanity further its crucial mission to provide affordable home ownership opportunities in Kansas City.

Habitat for Humanity showed their appreciation for our time and financial support, “Thank you for helping to make home ownership a possibility for Angela and her boys and volunteering with Habitat for Humanity of Kansas City.”

The organization is always looking for volunteers, both individuals and groups. Having volunteered ourselves, we can highly recommend and suggest you look into it whenever you’re ready to pick up the hammer to help a family like Angela’s.
